Thabo Rametsi, known for his role in the film Kalushi, has joined forces with business partner Thabiso Mabanna and South African global star Charlize Theron to bring to life the comic series Imbokodo. This collaboration aims to celebrate the legendary warrior women of Africa, such as Nandi, Nzinga, Modjadji, Llinga, Amina, Nehanda, and many others who have left a lasting impact on history and continue to inspire people today.
Imbokodo, co-founded by Rametsi and Mabanna, has partnered with Theron’s newly launched media venture, Secret Menu, as well as industry veterans Dawn Olmstead, Beth Kono, and AJ Dix, with plans to adapt the series into a scripted format. Theron expressed her excitement for the series, praising the epic scope and emotional depth of the world created by Rametsi and Mabanna, centered around powerful female African warriors.
Rametsi emphasized that Imbokodo is not just a comic series but a means of immortalizing African mythology and history in a way that resonates with audiences globally. He highlighted the importance of having a partner like Theron, who is dedicated to bringing diverse stories to life, in elevating Imbokodo to new heights.
The storyline of Imbokodo unfolds in a war-torn land among the Badimu tribes, set a thousand years later in Ndawo, which is divided into competing empires. Queen Nyameka and the Imbokodo, Ndawo’s fiercest warriors, are tasked with uncovering the truth behind the mysterious disappearances of young girls from the Monomotapa empire, while a nameless woman searches for her missing sister.
Imbokodo #1 is currently available in local comic shops, with Volume #2 scheduled for release on 12 February 2025, Volume #3 on 9 April 2025, and the grand finale, Volume #4, on 4 June 2025. This series promises to bring to life the indomitable warrior women of Africa and captivate audiences with its rich storytelling and powerful characters.
