CHAN 2024: Uganda and South Africa Set for Group-Defining Showdown

Simple but mathematically brutal as Uganda sit top of the group with six points, needing just a draw to secure progression. South Africa trail a point behind on four, which leaves them with no alternative but to claim victory in Kampala if they are to advance.

For the hosts, everything is within reach. Coach Morley Byekwaso is fully aware of the moment’s magnitude. “We know it will be a very tough game, but we are ready. This is our moment to make history. We are leading the group and want to maintain the solidity that has brought us here,” he said.

The visitors, however, come with a clear mission. Molefi Ntseki’s men know that their survival depends on one outcome only. “We are fully aware that this is a decisive game. For us, it is a final. The pressure is on Uganda, who are playing at home and are expected to win. We will focus on our strategy and take advantage of transition moments,” Ntseki stated.

Uganda will be spurred on by the roar of the Kampala crowd, a force that could tip the balance. But the same home advantage carries heavy expectation, with every missed chance certain to stir nerves in the stands.

South Africa, by contrast, lean on experience. The Bafana Bafana have weathered many storms in hostile atmospheres across the continent, and that resilience may prove their sharpest weapon when the pressure peaks.

Ninety minutes in Kampala will decide everything—pride, progress, and a place in history.
