Springbok stars set to shine in Champions Cup opener
This weekend will see several Springbok players showcasing their talent in the first round of the Champions Cup. Bulls head coach, Jake White, is counting on the experience of these players to lead his team to victory as they face off against Saracens, a formidable European side, in London on Saturday.
The Bulls have set their sights on winning both the United Rugby Championship and the Champions Cup this season. With a strong squad bolstered by new additions, they are currently sitting in third place in the URC standings with five wins out of six games. Now, their focus shifts to the prestigious Champions Cup, where they will be tested by the likes of Saracens, who have a rich history of success in the competition.
White is banking on the likes of Willie le Roux, Canan Moodie, Cameron Hanekom, Marco van Staden, Gerhard Steenekamp, and Johan Grobbelaar to deliver a stellar performance against Saracens. Grobbelaar will lead the team as captain, with Moodie slotting in at outside centre alongside David Kriel, and Sebastian de Klerk and Devon Williams taking up the wing positions.
The Bulls’ starting lineup boasts eight Springboks, with three more on the bench, underscoring the team’s determination to secure a crucial away win in this tough encounter.
Sharks field a strong contingent of Boks
Meanwhile, the Sharks will also have their fair share of Springbok talent on display as they take on Exeter Chiefs at home. Coach John Plumtree has selected a mix of experienced players, with 10 Springboks in the starting lineup and five on the bench.
Eben Etzebeth returns to lead the team, with Jordan Hendrikse at flyhalf and Siya Kolisi anchoring the back row at No 8. Trevor Nyakane will provide stability at tighthead prop, while Ethan Hooker steps in at outside centre in the absence of Lukhanyo Am. The Sharks, currently in sixth place in the URC standings, will look to build on their recent successes against an Exeter side languishing at the bottom of the Premiership table.
Stormers face Toulon in Gqeberha
In another exciting matchup, the Stormers will clash with French outfit Toulon in Gqeberha, with prop Neethling Fouche assuming the captaincy in place of the injured Dan du Plessis. Manie Libbok will orchestrate play at flyhalf, while Willie Engelbrecht takes on the role of No 8.
Engelbrecht and hooker Joseph Dweba will celebrate their 50th caps for the Stormers in this special encounter. Additionally, Seabelo Senatla is set to make his comeback from a career-threatening car accident, adding further excitement to the team’s lineup.
With Springbok stars shining bright across the Champions Cup fixtures this weekend, fans can expect a thrilling display of top-tier rugby talent on the field.
