The Lions are gearing up to wrap up their Pool 2 campaign at Ellis Park next week as they prepare to take on the Dragons in Joburg. The recent EPCR Challenge Cup match against Montpellier saw the Lions struggle with their defence, allowing scrumhalf Alexis Bernadet to score two tries and lead his team to a 28-5 bonus point victory.
From the start, Montpellier took the lead with lock Marco Taulegnie scoring a try within the first two minutes. Despite the Lions fighting back with a try from Springbok fullback Quan Horn, Montpellier maintained their advantage. Referee Ben Breakspear made some crucial decisions during the game, including yellow-carding Lions lock Etienne Oosthuizen and disallowing a try from Montpellier’s Madosh Tambwe.
Bernadet’s impressive support play and quick thinking led to two more tries for Montpellier, securing the bonus point for the French club. The Lions now look ahead to their final match against the Dragons, while Montpellier faces a quick turnaround as they travel to Newcastle to take on the Falcons.
The Lions will need to regroup and focus on their defensive efforts as they aim to finish their Pool 2 campaign on a high note. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting rugby journey.
