The recent wave of violence and unrest in the Ahafo Region has prompted the Catholic Bishop of Goaso Diocese, Most Rev Peter Kwaku Atuahene, to call for collaboration among key stakeholders to ensure peace and stability in the area. This comes in the wake of several disturbing incidents that have occurred in the region over the past three months, resulting in five deaths, numerous injuries, and property damage.
One of the tragic incidents that shook the region was the killing of a 30-year-old nurse, Richard Antwi Agyei, at the Yamfo Health Centre. Agyei was allegedly assaulted by police officers and later died in custody after being arrested for possession of illegal substances. Another incident in Sankore involved the death of sawmill operator Akwasi Adu, who was fatally shot during a confrontation with the police.
In a separate incident, three individuals were shot dead in a forest near Bechem for their alleged involvement in illegal logging activities. These incidents have raised concerns about the security situation in the region and have sparked calls for action from concerned residents, particularly the youth.
Most recently, students at Hwediem Senior High School staged a protest against the school’s management over poor sanitary conditions, unapproved fees, and inadequate infrastructure. The unrest in the region has not gone unnoticed, with the police service pledging to apprehend those responsible for the criminal acts.
Bishop Atuahene emphasized the need to address the prevailing lawlessness in the region, warning that such instability could deter potential investors, tourists, and holidaymakers. He also expressed concerns about the impact of the unrest on existing businesses in the area.
As Easter approaches, Bishop Atuahene urged residents, especially the youth, to embrace the spirit of peace and love embodied by Jesus Christ. He called on the Regional Security Committee, headed by Regional Minister Charity Ghardinar, to prioritize efforts to enhance peace and stability in the region.
In conclusion, Bishop Atuahene’s call for collaboration and peacebuilding efforts underscores the importance of unity and cooperation in addressing the security challenges facing the Ahafo Region. By working together, stakeholders can create a safer and more secure environment for all residents and visitors.
