In response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent attacks on Canada, several coffee shops across the country have taken a stand by serving “Canadianos” to their customers. This clever name change is a nod to the classic “Americano,” which is essentially an espresso shot diluted with hot water. The move has gained traction in cafes in British Columbia and Ontario, showcasing Canadian pride in the face of adversity.
Elizabeth Watson, the owner of Palisades Cafe in British Columbia, shared that the idea to rename the drink came after Kicking Horse Coffee, a company based in British Columbia, encouraged coffee shops to make the switch on social media. Kicking Horse Coffee has been quietly calling the drink “Canadianos” for 16 years and recently made it official by sharing a sign about the new menu item.
The decision to serve Canadianos comes at a time when President Trump has been making derogatory remarks towards Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, referring to Canada as the “51st state” and insulting its leadership. Trump has also announced plans to impose tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods, further straining relations between the countries.
The Canadiano movement has garnered support from other coffee shops like Cafe Belém in Toronto and Morning Owl in Ottawa, who see it as a way to stand up for Canadian identity and unity. In addition to coffee shops, other establishments like Montreal’s Fairmount Bagel have also taken a stand against Trump’s actions by introducing Canadian-themed food items.
Rhonda Shlafman, co-owner of Fairmount Bagel, emphasized the importance of maintaining Canadian independence and not succumbing to external pressures. Similarly, Carol Ann McDevitt, owner of the Roaring ’20s B&B in New Brunswick, has opted to serve local apple cider instead of orange juice to show support for local produce in light of Trump’s tariffs.
Overall, the Canadiano movement reflects a growing sentiment of patriotism and resilience in the face of external challenges. By rebranding a simple coffee drink, these establishments are sending a powerful message of unity and solidarity with their country.
