Are you passionate about storytelling and eager to make a difference in your community? Health-e News is inviting community journalists and grassroots activists to join their 2025 Social Determinants of Health Project. This project aims to shed light on the social and structural factors that influence health outcomes, such as poverty, inequality, access to healthcare, and living conditions.
What the Project Offers:
Participants in the project will have the opportunity to learn how to write compelling stories and produce impactful videos that amplify the voices of their community. They will also receive training on using storytelling as a tool for change, addressing issues like housing, unemployment, gender-based violence, and access to healthcare. The work produced by participants will be published on Health-e News and its platforms, reaching policymakers, NGOs, and communities across South Africa. Additionally, a stipend will be provided for each story produced.
Who Should Apply:
Community journalists with experience or a keen interest in health reporting, as well as grassroots activists actively involved in community initiatives, advocacy, or activism related to social and health justice, are encouraged to apply. No prior journalism experience is required – if you are passionate, motivated, and eager to learn, Health-e News wants to hear from you.
Commitment:
Participants in the project will be expected to participate in training workshops (both virtual and in-person), engage in regular reporting and content creation between March 2025 and December 2025, and collaborate with other fellows and Health-e News staff.
Application Requirements:
To apply, interested individuals must submit a personal statement (250-400 words) detailing their background, community work, or journalism experience, as well as their reasons for wanting to be part of the project and the stories they wish to tell about factors contributing to poor health in their community. Journalists should also submit three published writing and/or video samples, while activists should share writing samples or a description of a project or campaign they have been involved in.
Deadline and How to Apply:
Applications for the Social Determinants of Health Project close on Monday 3 February 2025. Interested individuals should submit their applications to editor@health-e.org.za with the subject line: “Community Journalist/Activist Application – Social Determinants of Health Project.”
If you are not interested in the project but would like to join the community journalist network, please refer to the separate call for applications provided by Health-e News.
