Young Bulls lock JF van Heerden Gains Valuable Experience from Seniors

After a tough 27-5 defeat to the Saracens, 20-year-old Bulls lock JF van Heerden remains optimistic about the lessons learned from the match. Despite the loss, van Heerden believes that with the guidance of the team’s coaches and senior players, they can rectify their mistakes and come back stronger in their upcoming game against the Northampton Saints.

Van Heerden, who was named the Ruggas 2022 forward of the year, has quickly risen through the ranks after impressing at the U20 level. He acknowledges the pressure that comes with playing at a higher level but credits the support and mentorship he receives from his coaches and teammates for helping him navigate the challenges.

Reflecting on the Saracens game, van Heerden points out that small errors in discipline cost the team, leading to two yellow cards. However, he remains confident that these issues can be addressed before their next match at Loftus Versfeld.

One of the key players van Heerden looks up to is fellow lock Ruan Nortje, who is currently sidelined with an injury. In Nortje’s absence, van Heerden has taken on the responsibility of calling the lineouts, a task he embraces with the guidance of senior players like Andries Bekker.

Van Heerden emphasizes the wealth of experience within the Bulls team, highlighting the collective effort in helping him grow as a player. He expresses gratitude for the opportunity to play at the senior level and acknowledges the privilege of starting in two matches for the team.

As the Bulls prepare to face the Northampton Saints, van Heerden is determined to bounce back from their previous defeat. However, he recognizes the challenge posed by the English side, who are coming off a convincing win over Castres Olympique and will be eager to maintain their lead in Pool 3.

Overall, van Heerden remains focused on his development as a player and values the mentorship he receives from his teammates and coaches. With a positive mindset and a willingness to learn, he is poised to make a significant impact on the Bulls’ performance in the upcoming matches.
