The Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kurt Edwin Simeon Okraku, has stood firmly behind the appointment of Nana Otto Addo as the Black Stars head coach, highlighting his exceptional performance during the interview process. Okraku emphasized that Addo was highly regarded by the five-member search committee, which played a crucial role in the Executive Council’s approval of his appointment.
In a meeting held on Friday, March 15, 2024, the GFA’s Executive Council endorsed the recommendation of the search committee after a thorough review. Led by GFA Vice President Mark Addo, the committee presented a detailed report outlining Otto Addo’s qualifications and potential for the role. Subsequently, the GFA reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund to release Addo for his second term as the Black Stars head coach, following his successful guidance of the team to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Despite his previous success, Otto Addo’s second tenure has faced criticism after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This outcome has sparked discussions about his suitability for the position. However, President Okraku reaffirmed the rationale behind Addo’s appointment, citing his impressive credentials and the committee’s confidence in him.
“Otto was outstanding during the interview process and received high ratings from the search committee, leading to the decision,” President Simeon-Okraku stated in an interview with Ghanafa.org. “The Committee interviewed a number of talented coaches to gauge their plans for transforming the team in our current situation, and Otto’s performance stood out, resulting in his recommendation to the Executive Council for approval.”
Meanwhile, following the AFCON qualification disappointment, Otto Addo has expressed his belief that he is the right person for the job and has declared that he will not resign as the Black Stars coach. Despite facing challenges, Addo remains committed to leading the team and working towards their improvement.
The GFA’s decision to appoint Nana Otto Addo as the Black Stars head coach has been met with both praise and criticism, underscoring the complexities and pressures of the role. As Addo navigates the challenges ahead, the football community will be watching closely to see how he leads the team in the upcoming competitions.
