The Gates Foundation, led by Chair Bill Gates, is making a significant commitment to partnering with governments in Africa that prioritize the health and wellbeing of their people. In a recent address at the African Union, Gates announced that the majority of his $200 billion philanthropic spend over the next 20 years will be directed towards Africa.

Gates emphasized the importance of innovation and partnership in accelerating progress in health and development on the continent. He highlighted the critical role of African leadership and ingenuity in driving Africa’s health and economic future. Gates expressed his commitment to supporting Africa’s development agenda and investing in partnerships that deliver results.

During his address, Gates was joined by Dr. Paulin Basinga, the foundation’s Africa director, in a fireside chat to discuss the investments and partnerships needed to drive future progress in Africa. Prominent African leaders, including Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Amina J. Mohammed, emphasized the importance of collaboration and shared responsibility in Africa’s development journey.

Gates called for prioritizing primary healthcare, stating that investing in primary healthcare has the greatest impact on health and wellbeing. He highlighted the progress made by countries like Ethiopia, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Zambia in driving scalable, homegrown solutions to health challenges.

Gates also spoke about the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in Africa’s future. He praised Africa’s young innovators for embracing AI and emphasized the importance of integrating AI into the continent’s healthcare systems. Gates pointed to Rwanda as an early example of using AI to improve service delivery and save lives.
