Investigation launched into burnt body found in North West

North West police have initiated an investigation into the death of an unidentified female after her burnt body was discovered in an open field near Mmabatho in Mahikeng on Wednesday afternoon. The body, found along Vryhof Road, had pieces of burnt tires around the neck and waist, leading authorities to believe that the woman was a victim of vigilantism.

A call for information

Authorities are urging anyone with information that may assist in solving this case to come forward. Contact the investigating officers, Captain Ompolokile Letebele at 082 416 3749 or Sergeant Pitso Kgetsana at 079 897 1858. Alternatively, information can be shared anonymously through the MySAPS app or by calling the South African Police Service Crime Stop at 08600 10111.

Strong condemnation of vigilantism

The North West acting provincial commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, strongly condemned acts of vigilantism, emphasizing that such actions could lead to anarchy and lawlessness within the community. He stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served through proper legal channels.

Similar incidents in the Western Cape

Just hours before the discovery in North West, Western Cape police found the bodies of three men in the Samora Machel informal settlement. The victims, aged between 26 and 35, were allegedly targeted and killed by community members who accused them of being armed robbers. This incident also appears to be a vigilante-style attack, with authorities suspecting that the victims were fatally assaulted.
