A shocking incident unfolded in Adams County on Christmas morning when a one-month-old baby was allegedly abandoned by its parents in a car seat on a Pecos Street median. The Adams County Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit revealed that the infant was exposed to cocaine, leading to charges of misdemeanor child abuse and reckless endangerment against Jarvis Sims, 42, and Christina Thurman, 33.
The arrest affidavit redacted the baby’s name and gender, but detailed the events leading up to the abandonment. A witness reported seeing a couple arguing in the 7400 block of Pecos Street around 8 a.m. The witness later saw a man, identified as Sims, place a car seat on the median and walk away, leaving the newborn baby inside. When the witness confronted Sims, he allegedly claimed that the baby belonged to Thurman and instructed the witness to give it to her before continuing to walk away.
Thurman, the baby’s mother, explained to investigators that she had left the apartment after arguing with Sims about her intoxication levels. She called her mother for a ride and began walking down Pecos Street when she encountered Sims with the baby in the car seat. Sims allegedly set the baby down in the median and walked away, prompting Thurman to keep walking to avoid further conflict.
Sims provided a different account, claiming that he had tried to give the baby to Thurman but she refused. He left the baby on the sidewalk and returned home because he had work in the morning. The infant was later taken to Children’s Hospital Colorado in Broomfield, where it tested positive for cocaine. Despite this alarming discovery, county officials assured the public that the baby was in good care and safe.
Thurman was released on a $50,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on February 7. Sims initially faced a $50,000 bail, which was later reduced to $2,500. He remains in custody and is also set to appear in court on the same date.
