Chef Moses Moloi has made waves in the culinary world, recently being crowned the Best Chef at the second annual South Africa Restaurant Awards. This prestigious accolade adds to his already impressive list of accomplishments, including receiving two out of three knives at the Best Chef Awards in Dubai and being presented with the Talent Of The Year Award 2025 by La Liste 1000.

Moloi is the owner and head chef at Gigi Restaurant, located in Midrand’s Waterfall City. Since opening the eatery in February last year, Moloi has been dedicated to creating a dining experience that showcases his unique perspective and culinary skills.

Reflecting on his recent success, Moloi humbly acknowledges that awards were never the goal, but rather a reminder that his hard work and dedication are being recognized and appreciated. He credits his team and supporters for their part in his achievements, emphasizing that these wins belong to everyone who has been a part of his journey.

With an impressive resume that includes international experience at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Florida and positions at renowned local establishments such as Greenhouse Restaurant, the Saxon Hotel’s Grei Restaurant, and FYN in Cape Town, Moloi’s menu at Gigi reflects the diverse influences of his culinary journey.

The dishes at Gigi are a reflection of Moloi’s experiences and lessons learned throughout his career. Rather than replicating the kitchens where he made his mark, Moloi has chosen to interpret these lessons in his own unique way, creating a menu that tells a story both geographically and emotionally.

As Gigi approaches its one-year anniversary, Moloi sees these recent accolades as affirmations of his decision to take the leap into restaurant ownership. For him, running a restaurant is more than just serving food; it’s about building something with heart, intention, and impact.

In a field filled with talented chefs, Moloi believes that South Africa has world-class culinary talent that is constantly evolving. He emphasizes the creativity, resilience, and passion of chefs in the country, highlighting the potential for growth and innovation within the industry.

As Moloi continues to push boundaries and showcase his unique culinary vision, it’s clear that his dedication to his craft and his commitment to creating memorable dining experiences will continue to set him apart in the culinary world.
