Armed robbers are targeting late-night bar hoppers in two of Chicago’s busiest nightlife districts, according to police reports. The holdup crew has been linked to five cases this month, with three incidents occurring in Wrigleyville and two in the Gold Coast.
Victims are being robbed while waiting outside for rideshares like Uber or Lyft to arrive. The robbers, described as three or four males, approach the victims and either display a gun or use physical violence to take property. In most cases, the robbers steal the victims’ phones and use them to access bank accounts.
In Wrigleyville, the crew struck in the 3500 block of North Clark at 1:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. on January 5, and again at 1:10 a.m. on January 11. In the Gold Coast, victims were targeted in the first block of West Division at 3 a.m. on January 11 and in the first block of East Elm at 2:16 a.m. on January 12.
The suspects are described as Black males between 16 and 25 years old. Detectives from Area Three are handling the investigation and can be reached at 312-744-8263.
CWBChicago, a local news outlet, was founded in 2013 by residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who were dissatisfied with the accuracy of information provided at local Community Policing meetings. The publication has since expanded its coverage area to include Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side areas. Their mission is to provide original public safety reporting with better context and detail than mainstream media outlets.
