On April 28, 2004, shocking images of prisoner abuse and torture by U.S. troops at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq were first revealed to the world through a report aired on the CBS television news program “60 Minutes II.”

In 1789, mutineers led by Fletcher Christian seized control of the ship HMS Bounty just three weeks after departing Tahiti, leaving the ship’s captain, Lieutenant William Bligh, and 18 crew members stranded in the Pacific Ocean.

In 1945, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and his mistress, Clara Petacci, met their demise at the hands of Italian partisans after attempting to flee the country.

In 1947, Thor Heyerdahl, a Norwegian explorer, embarked on a daring expedition from Peru aboard a balsa wood raft named the Kon-Tiki. The 101-day, 4,300-mile journey across the Pacific Ocean to the Polynesian Islands captivated the world.

In 1967, heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali was stripped of his WBA title for refusing to be inducted into the armed forces.

In 1994, former CIA official Aldrich Ames pleaded guilty to espionage and tax evasion after passing U.S. secrets to the Soviet Union and Russia, resulting in a life sentence without parole.

In 2001, California businessman Dennis Tito became the first space tourist to journey to the International Space Station aboard a Russian rocket from Central Asia.

In 2011, convicted sex offender Phillip Garrido and his wife, Nancy Garrido, pleaded guilty to the kidnapping and rape of California girl Jaycee Dugard, who was abducted at the age of 11 in 1991 and rescued 18 years later. Phillip Garrido received a sentence of 431 years to life in prison, while Nancy Garrido was sentenced to 36 years to life.
