Andres Iniesta Bids Farewell to Football in Tokyo Exhibition Match
Legendary Spanish footballer Andres Iniesta brought his illustrious playing career to a close on Sunday in a star-studded exhibition match in Tokyo. The game, which featured Barcelona and Real Madrid legends, drew over 45,000 fans and marked the 40-year-old’s transition from player to aspiring coach.
The match was a fitting tribute to Iniesta, who announced his retirement in October. In a dramatic moment, he delivered a last-minute cross that led to an own goal by Real Madrid’s defence, securing Barcelona’s 2-1 victory and leaving fans in awe.
Throughout his remarkable career, Iniesta achieved incredible success, winning two European Championship titles, a World Cup in 2010, nine La Liga trophies, and four Champions League titles during his 16-year tenure at Barcelona.
Sharing the field with former teammate Xavi Hernandez and other football greats like Rivaldo, Rafael Marquez, and Roberto Carlos, Iniesta expressed his nostalgia, saying, “Playing with Xavi again brought back a lot of memories, even if we’re no longer at our peak.”
After departing Barcelona in 2018, Iniesta spent five seasons at Japan’s Vissel Kobe before concluding his playing career in the UAE. Looking ahead, he revealed his ambition to venture into coaching, stating, “I’m considering obtaining my coaching license and exploring new opportunities in my career.”
