ANC strengthens integrity muscle – The Mail & Guardian

The African National Congress (ANC) has taken a bold step towards strengthening its integrity commission by implementing new measures to clean up the party. Members of the commission, including deputy chair Sophia Williams-de Bruyn and chair Reverend Frank Chikane, will now have more authority and clout in their roles.

One of the key changes is that members will undergo vetting and political education to ensure they are fit for their positions and have a deep understanding of the party’s values and principles. This move is aimed at weeding out any individuals who may not have the party’s best interests at heart and ensuring that only those with integrity and a commitment to the ANC’s values are part of the commission.

The ANC’s integrity commission plays a crucial role in upholding the party’s reputation and ensuring that its members adhere to high ethical standards. With the recent revelations of corruption and state capture that have plagued the party, it is more important than ever for the commission to be strong and effective in its oversight role.

The commission’s increased authority comes at a time when the ANC is facing growing pressure to address allegations of corruption and misconduct within its ranks. The Zondo Commission, which is investigating state capture, has uncovered numerous instances of corruption involving ANC members, including high-ranking officials.

The party’s decision to strengthen the integrity commission is a clear indication that it is serious about rooting out corruption and restoring trust in its leadership. By implementing these new measures, the ANC is sending a strong message that it is committed to cleaning up its house and holding its members accountable for their actions.

In addition to vetting and political education for commission members, the ANC is also considering other reforms to improve transparency and accountability within the party.
