The students from the STEM Department at Afua Kobi Ampem Girls’ Senior High School have achieved a remarkable milestone by designing and constructing a surveillance drone prototype for the Ghana Air Force. This innovative drone, named ‘Josephine’, is intended for border surveillance and delivering essential supplies such as weapons, medicine, and food to air force and military personnel.

Speaking about the project, one of the lead presenters stated, “This drone can be used to survey the borders and send weapons, medicine, and food supplies to air force and military personnel.” The group’s main spokesperson also disclosed that the project required an estimated cost of about 30,000 cedis.

This significant accomplishment highlights the school’s dedication to fostering student innovation in aeronautical engineering. It underscores Ghana’s increasing focus on STEM education as a vital component for national development and technological advancement. In recent years, the country has seen a surge in initiatives promoting STEM learning, especially at the secondary and tertiary levels.

Specialized institutions like the Accra High School STEM Centre and the Bosomtwe Girls’ STEM High School are providing students with hands-on experiences in robotics, coding, artificial intelligence, and engineering. These efforts are not only breaking gender stereotypes but also equipping young women with the skills to excel in traditionally male-dominated fields.

Moreover, STEM education in Ghana is poised to address real-world challenges and drive innovation in various sectors. Whether it’s developing drone technology for military and agricultural purposes or creating sustainable energy solutions, Ghanaian youth are demonstrating their readiness to lead Africa’s technological revolution.

Despite these advancements, there are still obstacles to overcome, including inadequate infrastructure, limited access to advanced laboratory equipment, and disparities between urban and rural educational institutions. To ensure the continuous growth of STEM education in Ghana, sustained investment, mentorship, and curriculum updates are essential to align with global trends.

By nurturing today’s STEM students, Ghana has the potential to cultivate a new generation of innovators, engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs who will propel the country towards a future defined by creativity, resilience, and progress. The future of STEM education in Ghana hinges on ongoing support and development, paving the way for a brighter and more technologically advanced tomorrow.
