The African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU) are celebrating a significant milestone as they mark the 25th anniversary of their enduring partnership. This partnership, which was established at the Africa-Europe Summit in Cairo in 2000, has evolved over the years to become a powerful force representing over 1.9 billion people and accounting for more than 40% of the UN’s membership.
Aligned with the Africa Agenda 2063 and the Global Gateway Investment Package for Africa, this milestone highlights the impact of the AU-EU partnership on fostering regional economic integration, sustainable growth, peace, security, governance, human development, and environmental sustainability. The upcoming Ministerial Meeting in Brussels on 21 May 2025 will bring together over 80 governments and the new leadership of both unions to discuss shared challenges and achievements.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, a series of initiatives will be promoted to showcase the development of the partnership and its concrete results. These activities will culminate in the 7th African Union-European Union Summit later this year, which will further strengthen the strategic alignment of the partnership around the four central pillars of the Joint Vision for 2030 adopted by African and European leaders in 2022.
The key pillars of the AU-EU partnership include prosperity, peace, security, governance, human development, and environmental sustainability. Both unions are committed to fostering a prosperous and sustainable Africa and Europe through initiatives that promote regional economic integration, sustainable trade and investment, and the green and digital transitions. They also work together on peace, security, and governance, supporting stability, the rule of law, and democratic institutions.
Investing in human development is another focus of the partnership, with joint initiatives on migration and mobility, education, culture, social inclusion, and humanitarian affairs. Empowering people, especially women and youth, to build prosperous and inclusive societies is a key priority for the AU and EU. Additionally, both unions are strong advocates for multilateralism and environmental sustainability, working together to address climate change and protect the planet.
In conclusion, the AU-EU partnership has been instrumental in driving global action to promote shared fundamental values and address pressing challenges. As they celebrate their 25th anniversary, the AU and EU are committed to further strengthening their partnership and working together towards a prosperous, peaceful, and sustainable future for all.
