African Migrants in the US Earn High Incomes, Surpassing Native-Born Americans
Recent data from the United States Census Bureau has revealed that African migrants in the United States have some of the highest median household incomes, surpassing even those of native-born Americans. Among these migrants, South Africans lead the pack with a median household income of $108,000. Other top-earning groups include Kenyans, Cameroonians, Ghanaians, and Nigerians, all of whom exceed the US average median household income of $77,000.
These earnings significantly outpace the median incomes in their respective countries of origin, highlighting the economic success and upward mobility of African diaspora communities in the US. According to projections by the Africa Center, the number of African cross-border migrants is expected to reach 11–12 million by 2050, further cementing their presence and impact on the American economy.
