Prof. Netswera, the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences at Durban University of Technology, recently highlighted the importance of cultivating strong leadership in Africa to unlock its vast potential. Speaking at the Technology, Business, and Society Seminar Series (TEBUSS) at Ghana Communication Technology University, he emphasized that leadership is the key to Africa’s self-sufficiency.

The professor underscored the significance of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) as a crucial step towards economic unity in Africa. However, he cautioned that policies alone are not enough without concrete implementation. He stressed the need for the right leadership to harness the continent’s potential for self-sustainability.

“We need to ensure that there is free economic trade, and I think we have made a start. The passing of the free African trade agreement is a very important milestone. However, it must be followed by action because a piece of paper means very little if there is no action thereafter,” Prof. Netswera stated.

He also highlighted the importance of seamless trade across African nations, making it easier to move goods between countries. The professor lamented the challenges of food security in Africa despite having 60% of the world’s arable land, stating that Africa currently produces what it does not eat and eats what it does not produce.

To address these issues, Prof. Netswera called for stronger collaboration between governments, academia, and industry. He emphasized the need for simplified travel within Africa, citing the difficulties in securing direct flights between African countries.

“In our rapidly changing world, isolation will not suffice,” he said, advocating for the adoption of technology to address pressing issues such as hunger, poverty, and healthcare disparities. Through innovation and ICT, sustainable job opportunities can be created, communities can be empowered, and economic growth can be stimulated in a transformative and inclusive manner.

The TEBUSS event continues to serve as a platform for dialogue on leveraging technology and leadership to drive Africa’s development. Prof. Netswera’s insights underscore the importance of nurturing the right leadership to unlock Africa’s full potential and achieve self-sufficiency.
