Oando, a prominent energy provider in Africa, is gearing up to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into its upcoming drilling operations. The company aims to leverage technology to boost operational efficiency and enhance overall performance.

Wale Tinubu, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Oando, revealed the firm’s intentions during an interview with CNBC Africa at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Tinubu emphasized the potential impact of AI on decision-making processes in drilling operations. By utilizing AI algorithms to analyze past experiences and explore various scenarios, Oando seeks to streamline its drilling campaigns and optimize resource allocation.

In addition to its AI initiative, Oando is collaborating with the Lagos state government to introduce 5,000 electric buses for public transportation in the state. The company plans to use gas as a transitional fuel to generate electricity for powering the buses, thereby reducing carbon emissions in Nigeria. Tinubu highlighted the significance of transitioning to electric vehicles to combat global emissions, with a focus on cleaner energy solutions and carbon capture techniques.

Oando’s commitment to promoting a “just” energy transition aligns with its efforts to address Africa’s energy challenges, particularly the lack of access to electricity for a significant portion of the population. Tinubu emphasized the importance of balancing decarbonization goals with the continent’s energy needs, advocating for a strategic approach that incorporates gas as part of the energy mix while transitioning towards a more sustainable and diverse energy portfolio.

Overall, Oando’s initiatives reflect a forward-thinking approach to energy innovation and sustainability, showcasing the company’s dedication to driving positive change in the African energy sector. By embracing cutting-edge technologies like AI and prioritizing cleaner energy solutions, Oando is poised to lead the way in promoting environmental stewardship and advancing energy access across the continent.
