American Author Stephen King Calls for Oscars to be Cancelled Due to Wildfires

Renowned American author Stephen King has taken a stand against the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony, suggesting that it should be cancelled in light of the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles.

King made his thoughts known in a post shared on the social networking platform Bluesky earlier this week.

He wrote, “I’m choosing not to participate in this year’s Oscars. In my view, they should be called off. There’s no room for glamour while Los Angeles is engulfed in flames.”

The wildfires have been a major concern for the Hollywood community, leading to the postponement of the Oscar nominations announcement to January 23 and an extension of the voting period until January 17.

King is not alone in his call for a pause in Hollywood’s awards season. Actresses Patricia Arquette and Jean Smart have also voiced their support for the idea.

However, there are those who argue that the Grammys and Oscars should proceed as planned to provide a sense of normalcy and positivity in the midst of the crisis.

In response to the debate, King expressed his disbelief in a follow-up Bluesky post.

He wrote, “I understand the arguments in favor of the Oscars being a celebration of life and the show must go on, but it feels like fiddling while Rome burns. Or in this case, dressing up while LA is ablaze.”

As of the latest update, the Grammy Awards and Oscars are still scheduled to take place on February 2 and March 2, respectively.
