The community of Bloekombos in Kraaifontein, Western Cape, is reeling from the tragic shooting of a primary school principal outside Ekuthuleni Primary School. The 54-year-old principal and his wife were ambushed by three unidentified men as they arrived at the school in their white Mahindra. The gunmen opened fire on the couple, fatally shooting the principal and injuring his wife.

The incident, which took place early in the morning as pupils were arriving at the school, has left the community in shock. The wife of the principal was rushed to the hospital for treatment, while the suspects fled the scene in a vehicle.

Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk confirmed that the provincial serious and violent crimes detectives are investigating the shooting. They are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in identifying the perpetrators.

Ward councillor Siyabonga Duka expressed his shock at the incident, particularly emphasizing the impact on the young pupils who witnessed the violence. He called for a thorough investigation to bring the culprits to justice.

Education activist Hendrick Makaneta condemned the senseless act of violence and called for increased safety measures in and around schools. He highlighted the importance of schools being safe spaces for learning and development, rather than environments plagued by violence.

Makaneta urged law enforcement to leave no stone unturned in their efforts to apprehend those responsible for the shooting. He also called on the government and education stakeholders to address the root causes of community violence and strengthen security measures in schools.

The loss of a dedicated educator under such tragic circumstances is not only a devastating blow to the Ekuthuleni Primary School community, but also a tragedy for the education sector in South Africa as a whole. It is essential to create a safe and secure environment for educators and pupils to fulfill their roles effectively without fear of violence.
