The Fight Against Poaching: A Strong Message Sent by the Department

Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment Dr Dion George welcomed the recent sentencing of a 51-year-old Congolese rhino poacher and money launderer to an 18-year prison term. The decision was made by the Middelburg Regional Court last week, sending a clear message that poaching will never be tolerated in South Africa.

This significant development comes on the heels of the Minister’s participation in a course at the Southern African Wildlife College, where he gained valuable ranger skills and insights into the challenges of poaching and the illegal wildlife trade. This experience shed light on the country’s ongoing struggles with these issues.

“I can assure South Africans that poachers’ reign of terror on South African wildlife is coming to an end,” stated Minister George. “The sentence imposed on the Congolese poacher reflects our unwavering zero-tolerance approach towards all forms of poaching, and we trust that the justice system will hold the remaining suspected syndicate members accountable as well.”

However, the Minister expressed disappointment at the revelation that the convicted poacher collaborated with locals while operating in Kruger National Park. Syndicate members reportedly bribed park rangers in exchange for information that facilitated their illegal activities.

“While a few rogue rangers and locals may tarnish the reputation of our parks, the dedicated efforts of the majority should not go unnoticed,” Minister George emphasized. “It is crucial for South Africans to continue supporting the brave rangers who risk their lives to safeguard our wildlife.”

During a recent court appearance, the convicted poacher pleaded guilty to all charges, while his 15 co-accused are scheduled to appear in Nelspruit Commercial Crimes Court in Mbombela later this month. The Minister has instructed the legal team to oppose bail for any poacher apprehended within the national parks of the country.

This decisive action by the department underscores the commitment to combatting poaching and protecting South Africa’s precious wildlife. The fight against poaching remains a top priority, and the Minister’s firm stance sends a powerful message that such criminal activities will not be tolerated.
