This year marked a significant milestone in the world of music as we celebrated a decade of Amapiano music. The infectious beats and vibrant culture of the Amapiano movement have captured the ears and feet of fans worldwide, making it a genre that continues to grow in popularity.

In 2024, fans took Amapiano to new heights by not only listening to their favorite songs but also curating and sharing unique Amapiano anthems that became the soundtrack to their year. The interest in the genre is evident in Spotify data, which shows that more than 20 million fan-made Amapiano playlists have been created.

Gen-Z has emerged as a driving force behind the genre’s growth, streaming over 2 billion hours of Amapiano music in 2024, a 50% increase from the previous year. Artists like LeeMcKrazy, Mellow & Sleazy, Tito, Yuppe, and Zee Nxumalo have resonated with younger listeners, representing a fresh generation of talented musicians.

Amapiano, inspired by Deep House, DiBacardi, and Kwaito music, has transcended its South African roots to become a global phenomenon. Countries like Nigeria, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France now stream the most Amapiano music outside of South Africa, with over 2 billion collective plays among them.

As Amapiano travels the world, artists and DJs have infused local sounds to create new subgenres. Nigeria’s Afropiano sound, a blend of Afrobeats and Amapiano, has gained popularity with hits like “Happiness” by Sarz and “Amapiano” by Asake. Additionally, Tanzania has embraced the Bongopiano genre, showcasing the genre’s widespread appeal.

In 2024, the fusion of Amapiano with pop music vocals has been a recipe for success, with artists like Tyla making a significant impact on the genre’s global trajectory. Her Amapiano-pop fusion has raised Amapiano’s visibility, making her the most-playlisted artist in the genre.

Dance has also played a crucial role in the genre’s success, with viral dance challenges helping to take Amapiano to the world. Artists like Kamo Mphela and Uncle Waffles, along with their fans, have built a bustling dance culture that has made the genre irresistible. Viral dance challenges have propelled hits like “Wadibusa” and “Dalie” to become the most playlisted songs of the genre, resonating across global dance floors.

Amapiano isn’t just music; it’s a cultural force that transcends borders and showcases South African creativity, flair, and spirit to the world. The genre’s ability to unite and inspire audiences globally is a testament to its power and influence.

As we press play on an Amapiano track, we become part of a global movement that bridges continents, reminding us of the unifying power of music. The genre’s continued growth and evolution are a testament to its enduring appeal and ability to connect people from all walks of life.
