The Ghana Police Service has made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of the recent arson attack on the Electoral Commission (EC) office in Ayensuano, located in the Eastern Region. Nine suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, which is believed to be linked to post-election tensions following Ghana’s presidential and parliamentary elections held on Saturday, 7 December 2024.

Former President John Dramani Mahama emerged as the president-elect after securing 56.55% of the votes, with Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia garnering 41.61%. The decisive margin of 1,671,093 votes in Mahama’s favor has been celebrated as a significant victory. However, the aftermath of the elections has been marred by unrest, with the burning of the EC office in Ayensuano being just one of several incidents of election-related violence.

In response to the escalating violence, President-elect Mahama has condemned the acts of aggression, urging outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo and the security agencies to take immediate action to restore law and order. He emphasized the need to prevent further unrest and ensure the safety of all Ghanaians, denouncing the violence as a “criminal enterprise.”

The arrest of the nine suspects brings the total number of individuals apprehended in connection with election-related violence to 106. All suspects are currently in police custody, cooperating with ongoing investigations. The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to justice and public safety, affirming that all perpetrators of election-related violence will be brought to justice.

Authorities have vowed to maintain peace and order amidst the ongoing tensions, emphasizing the importance of protecting communities and upholding law and order. The arson attack on the EC office serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by electoral disputes, prompting authorities to intensify efforts to ensure that all perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.

As investigations continue, the Ghana Police Service remains dedicated to protecting the public and maintaining peace and order. The commitment to justice and public safety will be unwavering as the authorities work to address the aftermath of the elections and bring all perpetrators of violence to justice.
