Armed Robbers Using Social Media Marketplace Ads to Lure Victims
Recent warnings from the police highlight a concerning trend of armed individuals using social media marketplace ads to lure victims into robbery traps. In a recent case, a 16-year-old boy was charged with robbing two men he had lured through an online ad.
In a separate incident, George Miller, 26, pleaded guilty to committing a robbery related to a marketplace transaction. The victim, a 52-year-old man, had arranged to purchase a PS5 on Facebook from Miller in January last year. However, the transaction took a dangerous turn when Miller allegedly brandished a firearm after receiving the cash payment.
During the robbery, Miller reportedly made alarming statements to the victim, indicating that he had been targeting women throughout the week. He fled the scene with the cash, leaving behind a box that was supposed to contain the gaming console but actually held books.
Despite his attempts to conceal his identity, Miller’s face and a distinctive tattoo on his left hand helped investigators track him down through his Facebook account. Miller ultimately pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery in court, with prosecutors dropping more serious armed robbery charges he was facing.
As per state law, Miller’s sentence was reduced to two years with the possibility of further reduction for good behavior. With credit earned during his time in custody, Miller is expected to be released in less than a year.
It is crucial for individuals engaging in marketplace transactions to exercise caution and prioritize their safety. The recent incidents serve as a stark reminder of the risks associated with online transactions and the importance of staying vigilant.
