Castle Rock Takes Stance on Immigration Policies

Castle Rock has made a bold statement by declaring its full support for President-elect Donald Trump’s immigration policies and deportation efforts. The town council unanimously approved a motion put forth by Councilmember Max Brooks during a recent meeting, signaling their willingness to assist in any way possible, including offering up the town’s police officers for support.

Brooks, who also serves as a Colorado House of Representatives member, has pledged to back state legislation that would allow local law enforcement agencies to collaborate with federal immigration officials on deportation efforts. This move comes in response to a law enacted in 2019 that restricts law enforcement from detaining individuals solely based on requests from federal immigration authorities.

In contrast to Castle Rock’s stance, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston has expressed his opposition to Trump’s deportation plans, even suggesting that he would mobilize the Denver Police Department to resist federal and National Guard troops if necessary. The divide between Castle Rock and Denver highlights the ongoing debate surrounding immigration policies at the local level.

Despite the differing viewpoints, Castle Rock councilmembers, led by Mayor Jason Gray, have clarified that their support for immigration policies pertains specifically to individuals who are in the country illegally. The council’s motion directs the town attorney and staff to draft an official declaration, which will be presented for approval at a future meeting.

While some councilmembers, like Ryan Hollington, have emphasized the importance of following the law in Douglas County, others, such as Kevin Bracken, have underscored the need for guardrails to ensure that deportation efforts are carried out appropriately and in the best interest of the town’s residents.

Overall, Castle Rock’s decision to align with Trump’s immigration policies reflects a broader conversation taking place across the country. As the debate continues, it remains crucial for local governments to consider the implications of their stance on immigration and work towards solutions that prioritize public safety and community well-being.
