The Artistic Eye of Jurica Galić Captures the Mundari People of South Sudan

During his time in South Sudan, Croatian photographer Jurica Galić discovered a unique practice of the Mundari people. They set fire to dried cow dung before sunset to repel mosquitoes, a traditional method that fascinated Galić. Using his artistic vision, he created an award-winning image that beautifully captures this cultural ritual.

Galić’s approach to photography goes beyond mere documentation; he seeks to explore the intricate relationship between humanity and nature. In the case of the Mundari people, he found inspiration in the natural surroundings and incorporated them into his composition. By framing the scene through the horns of an animal, Galić was able to create a visually striking image that draws the viewer into the cultural significance of the moment.

Reflecting on his experience, Galić expressed his desire to return to South Sudan to reconnect with the man featured in the image. He plans to donate a portion of his prize money to the individual and share his story with the world, shedding light on the lives of the Mundari people and their enduring traditions.
