South Africa’s container ports achieve record daily volume amid ongoing challenges
In August, South Africa’s container ports reached a significant milestone by moving 18,689 TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units) in a single day. This achievement, the highest daily volume since the pandemic, demonstrates a marked improvement in port operations despite existing infrastructure and capacity constraints.
The Southern African Association of Freight Forwarders (SAAFF) reported this record-breaking performance, shedding light on the progress made in enhancing port efficiency. Over the years, outdated equipment and limited handling capacity have led to delays and increased expenses for shippers. However, recent investments in new machinery and streamlined processes are beginning to show tangible results.
The CEO of SAAFF acknowledged the collaborative efforts of industry stakeholders in stabilizing port operations and driving productivity. While the record volume signifies resilience, continuous investment and efficiency enhancements will be imperative for sustained success in the future.
