The recent assault on a nurse at the Ridge Hospital in Accra sparked public concern over a handshake between the Minister of Health and the alleged assailant. However, the Ministry of Health has clarified that swift action was taken by the Minister following the incident.
In an interview on Joy Prime’s Prime Insight, the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Tony Goodman, explained that the Minister’s visit to the hospital was intended to show support for the staff after the assault. He mentioned that the Minister personally met with the nurse involved, encouraged her, and assured her that any lost items would be replaced. Additionally, the Minister instructed the hospital’s medical director to provide full support to the nurse.
Goodman emphasized that the Minister issued a stern warning to hospital management that attacks on health workers would not be tolerated. He also ensured that the matter was reported to the police and formed a committee to investigate the incident.
Regarding the controversial handshake between the Minister and the alleged attacker, Goodman clarified that it was coincidental and not premeditated. He mentioned that the Minister took decisive action after the handshake, condemning the assault and requesting additional security for the hospital from the Ghana Police.
The investigative committee appointed by the Minister has completed its work and is set to submit its report soon. The Ministry remains committed to protecting health workers and ensuring their safety in the workplace.
In a surprising turn of events, the man at the center of the incident, Ralph, has taken legal action by submitting a written report and providing evidence to support his claims. This development adds a new dimension to the case and underscores the importance of thorough investigations.
The Ministry’s stance on safeguarding health workers and holding perpetrators accountable reflects its dedication to upholding professionalism and ensuring a safe working environment for healthcare providers. As the situation continues to unfold, it is crucial to prioritize the well-being of frontline workers and address any challenges they may face in the line of duty.
