With the fast-paced lives of Gen Zers filled with studying, side hustles, and constant WhatsApp storms, traditional relationships can often feel like too much to handle. This has led to a growing trend among this generation towards a more simple and straightforward approach to intimacy – friends with benefits, or FWB.

According to clinical psychologist Dr Jonathan Redelinghuys, this shift towards FWB relationships is not about a fear of commitment, but rather a desire for authenticity and autonomy. It allows Gen Zers to explore connections without the societal pressure and expectations of traditional relationships.

Seven reasons for FWB

1. It delivers sex without emotional pressure

FWB removes the performance anxiety of emotional expectations. It allows individuals to share intimacy without the fear of emotional entanglement, creating a space for physical connection without the morning-after awkwardness.

2. Friendship and trust

Having a FWB relationship with a friend allows for a level of trust and comfort that is not always present in casual hook-ups. It’s about familiarity, trust, and honesty, creating a space where individuals can explore intimacy without the pressure of a traditional relationship.

3. Diary-flexible

With busy schedules and hectic lives, Gen Zers often struggle to find time for traditional relationships. FWB relationships offer a level of flexibility that allows individuals to fulfill their physical needs without the commitment of a full-blown relationship.

4. Judgement-free exploration

FWB relationships create a space for individuals to explore their sexuality and desires without fear of judgement. It allows for mutual consent and boundaries to be respected, creating a safe space for experimentation.

5. Post Breakup Comfort

After a breakup, the idea of getting back into the dating game can be daunting. FWB relationships offer emotional and physical companionship without the pressure of starting a new relationship, providing a sense of familiarity and comfort during a difficult time.

6. Bye Bye Drama

Gen Zers are not interested in the drama that often comes with traditional dating. FWB relationships offer a drama-free alternative that focuses on fun, honesty, and comfort without the emotional rollercoaster of a traditional relationship.

7. Deeper connections without blunt force trauma

While FWB relationships may start off as casual, they have the potential to grow into something deeper and more meaningful over time. The foundation of friendship allows for deeper connections to form organically, without the pressure of traditional relationship expectations.

Overall, FWB relationships offer Gen Zers a simple and authentic way to explore intimacy without the constraints of traditional relationships. It allows for flexibility, trust, and judgement-free exploration, creating a space for deeper connections to form naturally over time.
