Award-winning Afrikaans singer Karlien van Jaarsveld bared her soul in the latest episode of kykNET’s Net Mens, where she shared her journey of love, loss, and faith.

Karlien, known for her hit songs and her famous sibling Bobby van Jaarsveld, opened up about her tumultuous relationship with former Springbok player Derick Hougaard. Their high-profile divorce in 2015 was a shock to many, but Karlien bravely faced the challenges that came with it.

In the episode, Karlien, along with her current husband Joe Breytenbach, and their children, Elah and Samuel, spent time on the farm Vygeboom. The twins, Daniël and Eliah from her previous marriage to Hougaard, were also part of the family gathering.

The show delved into Karlien’s childhood, where she shared the struggles of constantly moving and starting anew at different schools. Her parents, Bob van Jaarsveld and Ronel Brink, also made appearances, shedding light on the impact of their rocky marriage and traumatic divorce on Karlien.

Reflecting on her rebellious years after matric, Karlien shared anecdotes of her unconventional path to music, eventually joining her brother’s band and later forming her own rock band.

Despite her successful music career, Karlien emphasized that her true home is with her family. She expressed that her loved ones are her anchor, referencing a poignant song by Aunt Laurika Rauch.

The episode also touched on Karlien’s marriage to Hougaard, where she revealed a deep need to save others, stemming from her own childhood trauma. The miscarriage of their daughter, Evah, was a turning point in their relationship.

Currently, Karlien and Joe are facing another challenge with their daughter Elah’s medical condition, but Karlien sees it as part of a greater plan. Her unwavering faith in God guides her through life’s ups and downs, finding meaning in every twist and turn.

The full episode of Net Mens is available on DStv Stream and Catch Up, with upcoming guests including the legendary singer Amanda Strydom. Tune in to kykNET on Sundays at 8pm to follow the inspiring stories shared on the show.
