Africa World Airlines (AWA) has made a significant milestone with the launch of its new air route connecting Accra, Ghana, to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The inaugural flight touched down at Ouagadougou International Airport on July 1, 2025, following a ceremony in Accra to mark the occasion.
The airline plans to operate three flights per week on this route, aligning with the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA) to facilitate smoother movement of people, goods, and services across borders. Ticket prices for the Accra–Ouagadougou route start at $290, offering affordable travel options for passengers.
Togbe Afede XIV, co-Chairman of Africa World Airlines and Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, emphasized the airline’s commitment to African integration through reliable and safe aviation services. He reassured travelers of AWA’s excellent safety record and reliability, highlighting the airline’s dedication to providing top-notch service to passengers from Burkina Faso.
In addition to enhancing connectivity between Ghana and Burkina Faso, Togbe Afede also emphasized the broader vision of reconnecting the Sahel region with the rest of the continent. He expressed hope that this new route would help link the Sahel region to the rest of Africa, in line with President John Mahama’s vision of strengthening ties with Burkina Faso and Niger.
Addressing concerns about high airfares, Togbe Afede acknowledged that while the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi could lead to lower prices in the future, it would take time to reflect in ticket costs due to existing financial commitments. He assured customers that AWA remains committed to providing value, service, and, most importantly, safety to all passengers.
Karim Tapsoba, speaking on behalf of the Director General of Civil Aviation in Burkina Faso, praised the new air route as a significant development in West African air transport. He expressed confidence that Africa World Airlines would contribute to enhancing the aviation network and strengthening economic and tourism ties between Ghana and Burkina Faso.
The launch of the Accra–Ouagadougou route comes at a time of increased regional integration efforts in Africa, including initiatives like the AFCFTA and ECOWAS. This new air route further strengthens ties between Ghana and Burkina Faso, opening up opportunities for trade, tourism, and diplomatic relations across West Africa.
With this latest development, Africa World Airlines joins a select group of carriers offering regular commercial flights between Ghana and Burkina Faso, playing a vital role in promoting regional connectivity and fostering closer ties between countries in the region.
