Zambia has seen a surge in digital fraud targeting consumers through various channels such as email, online, phone calls, and text messages. According to a recent survey conducted by TransUnion, 79% of Zambians reported being targeted by fraudulent activities from August to December 2024, but fortunately did not fall victim to these scams. The most common methods used by fraudsters to trick consumers included smishing, phishing, vishing, and social engineering scams.

Among those who fell victim to fraud, the most reported schemes were smishing, where fraudulent text messages are used to extract personal information, followed by phishing, vishing, and social engineering scams. Retail was identified as the industry with the highest suspected attempted digital fraud rate in Zambia in both 2024 and 2023.

TransUnion’s H1 2025 Update to the State of Omnichannel Fraud Report revealed that communities and video gaming were among the top industries targeted by suspected digital fraud in Zambia. Community platforms, such as online forums and dating sites, experienced the highest rate of suspected digital fraud attempts in 2024, followed closely by video gaming. Retail also saw a significant increase in suspected digital fraud attempts in 2024.

The study highlighted the importance of organizations utilizing identity, device, and behavioral insights to protect themselves and their customers from digital fraud. Consumers faced significant financial losses due to fraud, with the median amount lost in Zambia being ZK6,479. It is essential for consumers to remain vigilant and cautious when engaging in online transactions to prevent falling victim to fraud.

TransUnion, a global information and insights company, aims to make trust possible by providing an actionable view of consumers. With operations in over 30 countries, including Zambia, TransUnion offers innovative solutions in areas such as marketing, fraud, risk, and advanced analytics.
