New Trophy Unveiled for WAFCON 2025
The excitement is building as the Confederation of African Football prepares to unveil a new trophy for the upcoming WAFCON competition, set to take place in Morocco from July 5 to 26. CAF has announced that the new trophy will be revealed on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, in a special event hosted in Morocco, the host country for this year’s tournament.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe has been vocal about his commitment to advancing women’s football in Africa, and the introduction of this new trophy is a testament to that dedication. The unveiling of the trophy will be accompanied by an activation event with CAF’s sponsors, TotalEnergies, in the evening following the digital launch earlier in the day.
Not only is there a new trophy to look forward to, but the prize money for the competition has also received a significant boost. The total prize money has increased from $975,000 in the previous edition to $2,400,000 for this year’s tournament, making it an even more enticing competition for the participating teams.
Speaking of teams, Nigeria, the dominant force in WAFCON history with 11 titles to their name, has been drawn into a tough group alongside Botswana, Tunisia, and Algeria. Meanwhile, hosts Morocco will face off against Zambia, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Group A.
Defending champions South Africa find themselves in Group C, where they will compete against Tanzania, Ghana, and Mali. The tournament will kick off with Morocco taking on Zambia in the opening match at Rabat’s Olympic Stadium, setting the stage for an exciting competition.
Since its inception in 1998, the WAFCON has been a key event in African women’s football, serving as a qualifying tournament for the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Over the years, the competition has evolved and grown, with Nigeria’s dominance and South Africa’s recent success adding to the tournament’s rich history.
While Nigeria has been the standout team in WAFCON history, other countries like Morocco, Ghana, and Cameroon have also made their mark by reaching the final stages of the competition. With the new trophy and increased prize money, this year’s WAFCON promises to be a thrilling and competitive event that will showcase the best of African women’s football.
