Marjay Dotson succumbed to a gunshot wound in his back, as confirmed by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, while Jeremy Herred, aged 14, underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to his neck.
Reports of shots fired near the park’s basketball courts and pool led to Chicago police and fire department personnel responding to the scene at 1401 South Sacramento at 7:03 p.m. on Thursday.
An individual, identified as a 55-year-old man who was reportedly a pool lifeguard or supervisor, was detained at the location. He claimed that the boys had attacked him while he was working on his bicycle. It was revealed that he possessed a valid concealed carry license.

Surveillance video footage shows the man kneeling next to his bicycle on a sidewalk as the two boys and another person approach from a distance. The footage, although without audio, captures the moments leading up to the shooting.
The video clip depicts the armed man opening fire on the two boys, resulting in Marjay Dotson and Jeremy Herred sustaining gunshot wounds.
