The Member of Parliament for Gomoa East, Desmond De-Graft Paitoo, has raised concerns about the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) accusing them of politically motivated conduct. This comes after the Commission requested clarification regarding his use of the “Dr” title, prompting Mr. Paitoo to question the motives behind the inquiry.

In a statement, Mr. Paitoo expressed his uncertainty about who is orchestrating these actions, suggesting that GTEC may be selectively targeting members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He voiced his suspicions about the Commission’s approach, indicating that he is unsure of the influences behind such actions.

The Commission had written to the legislator requesting confirmation of the institution that conferred his doctorate, whether it was earned or honorary, and the date of conferment. This inquiry is part of GTEC’s broader initiative to address the unauthorized use of unearned or honorary academic titles, especially among public figures.

In response to the inquiry, Mr. Paitoo stated that he has referred the matter to his legal counsel and will provide a formal response through his attorneys. He expressed reservations about both the approach and timing of the Commission’s action, emphasizing the need for a more personalized and direct communication method.

Mr. Paitoo clarified that he has never used the “Dr” title in any official capacity or documentation. He explained that he received an honorary recognition for his professional contributions but has never presented it as an academically earned qualification. He reiterated that the title was bestowed upon him for his work and is not an academically earned designation.

The ongoing tensions regarding the verification of academic credentials among public officials and the processes employed by regulatory bodies are highlighted in this development. It underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in the use of academic titles, especially among public figures.

Overall, Mr. Paitoo’s response reflects his commitment to addressing the Commission’s inquiry through legal channels while raising important questions about the motives behind such actions. This incident sheds light on the complexities of verifying academic credentials and the need for clear guidelines in addressing such matters.
