How to visit Colorado's Blue Lakes in summer 2025

The Blue Lakes area in Southwestern Colorado is a popular destination for hikers and backpackers, but this summer may be the last time visitors can explore the area without a permit. A construction and restoration project will close the main trailhead from June 2 until the end of August, making access to the Blue Lakes more challenging.

Hikers are not allowed to bypass the construction on County Road 7 near Ridgway, even on foot, as it could result in a hefty fine or jail time according to the U.S. Forest Service. However, an alternative route to the lower, middle, and upper Blue Lakes will be open in summer 2025. This route is longer and more technical, requiring expert four-wheel driving skills and high-country hiking experience.

The 9.5-mile out-and-back hike starts at the upper Yankee Boy Basin parking lot on the south side of the San Juan Mountains. Hikers will traverse the ridge near Mt. Sneffels using the 13,000-foot Blue Lakes Pass. Unlike the conventional trail, which gradually ascends through forests and meadows, this alternate route starts above treeline and descends steeply from the peaks into the basin where the lakes are located.

To access the trailhead, visitors must drive an OHV road and then hike up and over the ridge before descending into the basin. The rugged, high alpine terrain and unpredictable weather at these elevations require hikers to be prepared for challenging conditions. Additionally, the 3,000-foot ascent on the way out should not be underestimated.

The drive to Yankee Boy Basin Road from the town of Ouray is approximately eight miles one-way and includes switchbacks and rocky terrain. A high-clearance, four-wheel drive vehicle and technical driving skills are essential for navigating this route. Backpackers will be allowed to camp at Lower Blue Lake this summer, as confirmed by the Forest Service.
