Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has come out swinging against former president Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, accusing them of trying to undermine the EFF under the guise of promoting “black unity” among opposition parties. Zuma has been advocating for the unification of so-called black parties to challenge the ANC and the DA, claiming that the proliferation of these parties has hindered the progress of black people in South Africa.

Malema, however, has called out Zuma for his hypocrisy, pointing out that the MK party was only founded in December 2023. He questioned Zuma’s motives, stating that if he truly wanted unity, he should have joined the EFF instead of forming a parallel organization. Malema also raised concerns about the selective targeting of the EFF when it comes to calls for the unification of black parties, questioning why other parties like the ANC and the Patriotic Alliance are not held to the same standard.

The relationship between the EFF and the MK party has been strained, particularly after former EFF members defected to the MK party, resulting in the latter overtaking the EFF as the third largest party in South Africa. Malema made it clear that he would not work with former deputy president Floyd Shivambu, who was recently sacked as MK party secretary general over an unauthorized trip to Malawi. Despite Shivambu’s experience, Malema expressed confidence in the EFF’s ability to hold their own in parliament.

Malema emphasized that the EFF would not be intimidated by the MK party and remained committed to their work in parliament. He stressed the importance of genuine belief in their work and the effort put into researching the issues they address. Malema’s unwavering stance against external pressures and his dedication to the EFF’s mission highlight the party’s resilience in the face of political challenges.

Overall, Malema’s response to Zuma’s calls for unity sheds light on the complexities of South Africa’s political landscape and the power dynamics at play among opposition parties. His bold statements reflect the EFF’s commitment to their principles and their determination to navigate the intricate web of political alliances and rivalries in the country.
