Two babies rescued after being kidnapped from Dora Nginza Hospital

After a terrifying ordeal, two newborn babies who were abducted from Dora Nginza Hospital in Gqeberha have been safely returned to their mothers. The premature baby boys, aged four and two days old, were taken from the hospital’s neonatal ward on Tuesday evening. One of the infants was also receiving treatment for a broken arm at the time of the abduction.

Arrest of suspects

The swift action of the Gqeberha police’s Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit led to the arrest of two female suspects in connection with the kidnapping. A police officer noticed the suspects carrying infants outside the hospital and upon questioning them, confirmed that they were the missing babies. The suspects, aged 25 and 26, will face charges in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court.

Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner Brigadier Loyiso Ngalo praised the efforts of the police team in locating the infants and reuniting them with their mothers.

Relief and gratitude

Deputy Executive Mayor Gary van Niekerk expressed relief at the safe return of the babies and their reunion with their families. Both infants have been brought back to the hospital and have received their first feed since being rescued.

Mysterious abduction

The kidnapping of the babies from the maternity ward sparked confusion and concern among hospital staff and parents. One mother discovered her baby missing after returning to feed him, while another mother later realized her son was also gone. Security footage captured two women attempting to access the ward with a bag, with one managing to enter the nursery unnoticed and leave through a different exit.

The incident has raised questions about hospital security and the safety of newborns in healthcare facilities. The quick response and collaboration between law enforcement and health authorities played a crucial role in the safe recovery of the abducted babies.
