Dr. Johnson Asiama, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), recently emphasized the need for a continent-wide digital strategy to drive economic integration and growth in Africa. Speaking at the 2025 3i Africa Policy Forum in Accra, Dr. Asiama highlighted the significance of digital coordination among African nations, stating that harmonized systems are essential for the continent’s financial future.

He pointed out that Africa’s digital transformation presents an opportunity to establish a unified financial infrastructure that can support small businesses, foster trade, and enhance financial access across borders. Dr. Asiama stressed the importance of scaling efforts through continental coordination to achieve the vision of One Africa, One Market. This involves harmonizing regulatory frameworks, promoting interoperability across financial infrastructures, and building trust and transparency across jurisdictions.

The Governor reiterated the Bank of Ghana’s commitment to facilitating seamless cross-border transactions, which are crucial for unlocking the full potential of Africa’s growing digital economy. He mentioned that the central bank is collaborating with regional and continental partners to eliminate barriers and enable real-time payments and digital financial services across African countries.

Dr. Asiama highlighted the Bank of Ghana’s collaboration with the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) and a recent fintech passporting partnership with the National Bank of Rwanda as examples of trust-based partnerships that support regional integration. The 3i Africa Policy Forum, focusing on innovation, investment, and inclusion in Africa’s fintech landscape, has attracted central bankers, tech leaders, and policymakers from across the continent.

His remarks align with the growing calls from African financial leaders for deeper collaboration on digital infrastructure to enhance intra-African trade and economic resilience. The push for a continent-wide digital strategy underscores the potential for digital innovation to drive economic growth and integration in Africa.
