Pirates Narrow the Gap on Log Leaders with a Victory Over Golden Arrows
Orlando Pirates secured a crucial 2-1 victory against Golden Arrows in an intense Betway Premiership clash held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. The win not only kept the Buccaneers’ hopes of clinching the league title alive but also closed the gap on log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns to just nine points, with a game in hand.
Head coach Jose Riveiro made significant changes to the starting line-up, with seven new faces taking the field compared to their previous match against Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto derby.
The match was a spectacle for the fans in attendance, with both teams displaying attacking prowess. Despite numerous opportunities created, the first half ended in a stalemate.
Golden Arrows targeted the inexperienced Yanga Madiba on the left flank, looking to exploit his vulnerability. However, the Pirates defense held firm to deny any clear chances for the hosts.
The breakthrough came in the second half when Kabelo Dlamini set up Patrick Maswanganyi to give Pirates the lead. However, Golden Arrows responded quickly, with Siyanda Mthanti equalizing just eight minutes later.
It was substitute Tshegofatso Mabasa who sealed the victory for Pirates in the 73rd minute with a well-taken volley, ensuring all three points for the visitors.
With the win, Pirates now turn their focus to the upcoming Nedbank Cup final against arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs at the same venue on Saturday. The Buccaneers will be looking to carry the momentum from this victory into the final showdown.
