Emma Sallah, the founder of the Anglo Special School in Keta, has been making waves as a finalist in MTN Heroes of Change Season 7. Her journey into advocating for children with intellectual disabilities began in 2012 when she volunteered at the Autism Awareness Care Center in Accra. It was during this time that she formed personal bonds with the children and felt a deep passion for helping them.

After the passing of her mother, Emma relocated to Keta for healing. It was there, during church visits, that she noticed children with disabilities being excluded from education and social activities. She discovered that families had to send their children all the way to Hohoe for special education, prompting her to take action. In October 2018, she established the Anglo Special School—a free day center that caters to children with autism, Down syndrome, and other intellectual disabilities.

The school not only provides education but also offers daily meals, care, and a safe environment where children feel accepted. Many of the students have shown remarkable improvement, with one nonverbal student even learning to communicate after years of support. Emma also assisted the mother of a student with special needs in starting a charcoal business, empowering her to become self-sufficient.

Funding for the project primarily comes from Emma’s personal savings, small donations, and proceeds from creative ventures such as a seashell art business. In addition to running the school, Emma organizes workshops for mainstream teachers, community health screenings, and awareness campaigns to challenge stigma in the Keta and Anloga areas.

Emma’s work has been widely recognized for its impact. A researcher conducting a thesis on disabilities noted how frequently Emma’s project was mentioned during interviews in the community. Her efforts have enabled children to participate in events outside Keta, boosting their confidence and life skills. Some students now contribute to household chores, a task previously thought impossible.

Those who know Emma and her work see her as a beacon of hope. One supporter expressed pride in her accomplishments, stating, “Instead of grieving after losing her mother, she used that pain to build something beautiful.” Despite limited resources, Emma continues to create a space where every child feels seen, valued, and capable of learning.

Emma’s story embodies the spirit of the MTN Heroes of Change initiative—selfless service and a dedication to transforming lives through education and compassion. It is a testament to the power of one individual’s determination to make a difference in the lives of others.
