Today is Tuesday, April 29, the 119th day of 2025. There are 246 days left in the year.

On this day in history, back in 1992, a jury in Simi Valley, California, acquitted four Los Angeles police officers who were charged with assault and using excessive force in the videotaped beating of motorist Rodney King. This controversial verdict sparked six days of riots in Los Angeles, resulting in the destruction of hundreds of businesses and over 60 deaths.

In 1916, the Easter Rising in Dublin came to an end as Irish nationalists surrendered to British forces. In 1945, American soldiers liberated the Dachau concentration camp during World War II. Additionally, in 1991, a devastating tropical cyclone hit Bangladesh, causing a storm surge that led to more than 138,000 deaths.

On a more positive note, in 1997, the Chemical Weapons Convention, a global treaty banning the use of chemical weapons and requiring the destruction of existing stockpiles, went into effect. In 2008, then-Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama publicly denounced his former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, for what he deemed as “divisive and destructive” remarks on race.

In a moment of celebration, in 2011, Britain’s Prince William and Kate Middleton tied the knot in a lavish ceremony at London’s Westminster Abbey.

Today’s birthdays include musician Willie Nelson who turns 92, baseball Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio who is 91, and conductor Zubin Mehta who celebrates his 89th birthday. Other notable birthdays include comedian Jerry Seinfeld (71), actor Daniel Day-Lewis (68), and actress Michelle Pfeiffer (67).

In sports, tennis Hall of Famer Andre Agassi turns 55, NHL center Jonathan Toews is 37, and golfer Justin Thomas celebrates his 32nd birthday. Pop singer Foxes turns 36 today.
