Badroodien also mentions that the city is planning a new project to address the issue in Siyahlala. The project involves installing new chemical toilets in the area to provide residents with a safer and more hygienic sanitation solution.

“We are working closely with community leaders and residents to ensure that the new project meets their needs and provides a long-term solution to the ongoing sanitation challenges in the informal settlement,” says Badroodien.

The city is also exploring options to provide Section G of Siyahlala with access to running water, as this is crucial for maintaining good hygiene and overall health in the community.

Residents like Lona Bukula and Anele Gcebetsha are hopeful that the new project will bring much-needed relief to their community. They are tired of living in squalor and facing health risks due to the lack of proper sanitation facilities.

“We deserve better. We deserve access to clean toilets and running water like everyone else. It’s time for the city to step up and prioritize the needs of informal settlement residents,” says Bukula.

As the city moves forward with its plans to address the sanitation crisis in Siyahlala, residents are hopeful that they will soon have access to safe and hygienic sanitation facilities that meet their basic needs and improve their quality of life.

Residents in informal settlements in Cape Town are facing challenges with non-functional full flush toilets, but the City assures them that they will respond as soon as it is safe to do so and escorts will be arranged. Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Waste, Alderman Xanthea Limberg, stated that they are aware of the situation and are working on solutions.

According to Limberg, there is a project planned for the 2025/26 financial year to address the issue. The project aims to temporarily replace the non-functional full flush toilets with container toilets for the Siyahlala informal settlement. This will allow the City to investigate the possibility of redesigning the sewer line and assess the available sewer network capacity.

The City acknowledges the importance of providing proper sanitation facilities to all residents, regardless of their living conditions. By addressing the challenges faced by those in informal settlements, the City hopes to improve the overall living conditions and quality of life for all residents.

In the meantime, residents are encouraged to report any issues with their sanitation facilities so that the City can prioritize repairs and maintenance. By working together, the City and residents can ensure that everyone has access to safe and hygienic sanitation facilities.

Overall, the City of Cape Town is committed to addressing the challenges faced by residents in informal settlements and is working towards providing sustainable solutions for improved sanitation services. Through collaboration and communication, the City aims to create a better living environment for all residents.
