Bill Nye the Science Guy, known for his iconic catchphrase “Science rules!” has recently spoken out against Health and Human Services chief Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his controversial views on science and vaccines. In a passionate speech at STAT’s Breakthrough Summit East in New York, Nye criticized Kennedy for his disbelief in vaccines, citing the importance of scientific research and the dangers of diseases like polio.

Nye also called out Dave Weldon, whose anti-vaccine stance cost him a potential leadership position at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nye expressed his frustration with individuals who reject scientific evidence and endanger public health with their beliefs.

During a panel discussion on ataxia, a rare movement disorder that has affected Nye’s family, he emphasized the need for continued research and advocacy in the face of political challenges. Andrew Rosen, CEO of the National Ataxia Foundation, echoed Nye’s concerns about the current federal environment and its impact on scientific progress.

Despite the obstacles, Nye remains optimistic about the future of science and the role of advocacy in promoting research. He highlighted the constitutional mandate for Congress to support scientific advancements, calling for a renewed focus on evidence-based decision-making.

As the panel concluded, Rosen commended Nye for his efforts to educate the public on science, noting his Presidential Medal of Freedom as a symbol of his dedication. Nye encouraged the audience to stay informed and engaged in scientific issues, emphasizing the importance of challenging misinformation and promoting a culture of evidence-based decision-making.

In a time of political division and skepticism towards science, Nye’s message serves as a reminder of the crucial role that research and education play in shaping a healthier and more informed society. Despite the challenges ahead, Nye remains committed to advocating for science and promoting a greater understanding of the world around us.
