Seven Dead in Taxi Violence Incident in Gauteng this WeekArrest of East London Taxi Boss

Another tragic incident of violence at a taxi rank in Gauteng has left four people dead and three others injured in Johannesburg. This brings the total number of fatalities in taxi-related shootings in the province to seven this week.

The shooting took place on Thursday morning near Doornfontein, where unknown suspects in a white BMW opened fire on bystanders at the taxi rank. The victims, identified as taxi drivers, were shot at randomly by the armed men who entered the rank and began shooting indiscriminately.

Police have not made any arrests in connection with the incident yet, but they have identified the vehicle used by the suspects. The Provincial Taxi Violence Unit will be leading the investigation into the matter.

Arrest of East London Taxi Boss

This incident follows another shooting at a taxi rank south of Vosloorus on Wednesday, where three people lost their lives. In a separate development on the same day, a taxi boss in East London was arrested for his alleged involvement in murders and extortion within the taxi industry.

The suspect, who is a prominent figure in the Eastern Cape taxi industry, has been implicated in several criminal activities related to the sector. The arrest came after a thorough investigation led by specialized police units.

The establishment of a National Taxi Violence and Extortion Task Team underscores the seriousness of the issue within the industry. The team is dedicated to addressing and preventing crime in the taxi sector through targeted investigations and enforcement actions.

It is evident that more needs to be done to regulate the taxi industry and prevent further incidents of violence and extortion. Experts have called for stricter measures to be put in place to ensure the safety and security of all individuals involved in the transportation sector.
