Russia Retakes Two Villages from Ukrainian Forces in Kursk Border Region

Russia announced on Saturday that it had regained control of two more villages from Ukrainian forces in the Kursk border region, as part of its offensive to reclaim seized territory.

The Russian military has made significant advances this week in recapturing land that was initially taken by Ukraine in the western Kursk region.

According to the Russian defence ministry, the villages of Zaoleshenka and Rubanshchina, located north and west of the town of Sudzha, have been secured by Russian troops. Sudzha was the main town that Moscow successfully reclaimed earlier in the week.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had issued a call on Friday for Ukrainian troops in Kursk to surrender, offering them assurances of safety and respect for their lives. In response, US President Donald Trump urged the Kremlin to spare the lives of the surrendering soldiers.

“If they lay down their arms and surrender, they will be guaranteed life and dignified treatment,” Putin stated on Friday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged on Friday that the situation in Kursk is “obviously very difficult.” The Ukrainian army has reportedly retreated west towards the border, as indicated by a map shared on social media.
